Note the counter-intuitive ordering: the higher-numbered terminal (003T) is the fine-wire part, and the lower-numbered terminal (002T) is the heavier-wire part. Specification differences worth verifying before you cross-reference
Six points deserve attention before you sign off a cross-reference.
- Insulation resistance is lower on the KR1501 — 100MΩ versus JST's 500MΩ. This is the one parameter where the JST part is documented to a tighter figure. JST's ZH datasheet states 500MΩ minimum, and KONNRA documents the KR1501 at 100MΩ minimum. If your specification or your customer's requires a minimum insulation resistance above 100MΩ, raise it with KONNRA engineering before you qualify the part rather than after.
- Insulation diameter range is narrower. JST's two ZH terminals accept 0.5–0.9mm (fine wire) or 0.8–1.1mm (heavier wire). KONNRA documents the KR1501 at 0.4–0.8mm. Through-Hole or SMT: How to Choose
The ZH is unusual among the compact JST families because it offers both mounting technologies, and the KR1501 matches that with six separate orderable components. The decision is usually mechanical rather than electrical.

The practical rule. Choose through-hole when the connector will see repeated mating cycles or cable pull — the pins carry the load. Choose SMT when assembly cost and board real estate matter more than mechanical retention, and the cable is likely to be routed and left in place. Check the far side of the board. A through-hole header needs clearance behind the PCB. In a stacked design, that clearance may not exist — which is the most common reason a ZH design ends up SMT despite a preference for through-hole. Note on the SMT types. - 1A or less, and board height is the constraint → SH 1.0 / KR1000. Smallest of the five.
- 1A or less, and you need the Pixhawk ecosystem standard → GH 1.25 / KR1259.
- 1A, and you want a mechanically locked connector with a compact-but-handleable pitch → ZH 1.5 / KR1501. The middle ground, and the only one of the three compact families with a through-hole option.
- Up to 2A, common in hobby, battery and Arduino-class wiring → PH 2.0 / KR2004.
- Up to 3A with larger mechanical retention → XH 2.5 / KR2501.
Two things this table makes clear. First, voltage rating jumps sharply with pitch — 50V across the three compact families, then 100V for PH and 250V for XH. If your design runs above 50V, ZH is not the answer whatever the space constraint says.
