A cosmetic packaging quotation is easier to compare when it identifies the tooling charge, the recurring piece price and any tooling recovery included in that price. A lower quoted unit price can reflect a different order quantity or scope. It does not, by itself, establish a lower project cost.
Establish the pricing basis
Identify the component or assembled pack, material specification, decoration, assembly and packing covered by each quotation. Compare the same quantity, currency and delivery basis, with freight and taxes identified. A molded shell and a decorated assembly are different priced items even when their model names look similar.
Protolabs explains that injection mold costs can be spread across more produced parts. This general relationship helps explain volume-dependent quotations; its examples are not Sambound prices or production commitments.

Distinguish an upfront charge from recovery per piece
Ask whether tooling is paid upfront, recovered through the unit price or handled through a stated combination. Identify the tool, included trials and any separately priced modifications. Ownership, maintenance and transfer arrangements need explicit terms; paying a tooling invoice does not establish those terms on its own.
For a simplified example, suppose a hypothetical tool costs 6,000 currency units and the recurring manufacturing price is 1.20 per piece. Spreading that tool over 20,000 pieces adds 0.30 per piece, giving 1.50 before other charges. Over 60,000 pieces, the same arithmetic adds 0.10. These invented figures illustrate allocation only, not a supplier quotation.
Check the volume and later-order treatment
Confirm whether the recovery volume is one order, a committed program quantity or an uncommitted forecast. Record what happens when orders fall short, exceed the recovery quantity or require a design change. Ask whether the later piece price changes after recovery and when that change takes effect.
An upfront tooling line and a tooling-related amount within the piece price require an explanation of their respective scope. Their coexistence is not enough to conclude that the same cost has been charged twice. Reconcile the amounts and terms before comparing total program costs.
